Geforce 6800 - the next generation

CroTeam was a group of Croatian developers that literally appeared out of nowhere a couple of years ago. I have been rarely as impressed with a new game engine through the years as with the Serious Sam engine. It’s very flexible, customizable, delivered outstanding graphics for it’s time and was/is playable on a wide range of platforms.

The Second Encounter was the successor of the original game and while game play was quite similar to it’s predecessor, it was a definite improvement in graphics quality.

The only other glitch on GeForces that hasn’t been fixed yet since the advent of the GF3, is the 16bit Z-buffer problem. For unknown reasons the application won’t set a 24bit Z-buffer, which you’ll have to do manually by lowering the console and type in:

gap_iDepthBits=24
ApplyVideoMode()

The change to a 24bit Z-buffer will hardly affect performance and you’ll escape some nasty Z-aliasing you usually get with 16bit Z.

One more thing I’d like to note is that the majority measures performance in SS:SE with the extreme quality script of the game. I used a slightly modified version of it, since I’m not a big fan of unjustifiably high texture aliasing and that’s exactly what a few in game filtering settings result to. It’s up to you to decide whether you want “extreme quality” in the real sense or “extreme texture aliasing” after all.

Modified settings are as follows:

Effect filtering method = maximum
Filtering booster = disabled
LOD quality (models) = supreme
Texture LOD bias = normal
